Description

Social determinants of health (SDoH) are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. They include things like economic status, education, healthcare access, neighborhood quality, and social support. Evidence is building that these non-medical factors have a significant impact on people’s health. What is the community health worker (CHW)’s role in improving these “upstream” health factors? We will discuss how CHWs influence quality of life issues as defined by the 2022 Mecklenburg Health Opinion Survey (see pages 32-36 of 2022 Mecklenburg County CHA). We will also highlight organizations and programs in Mecklenburg County that are impacting SDoH.
