Addictive substances and practices can take many forms. From a small pill, a slot machine, online shopping, internet pornography, or the inability to unplug from social media, cell phone use or the endless array of new apps. Regardless of the “drug of choice” there is one commonality behind it all, DOPE!
Addiction is a disorder with significant impact on the brain and one brain chemical in particular is involved when the reward pathway is activated, DOPE (dopamine). Not all addictions and addictive behavior are the same but the compulsions and cravings of the addicted brain have the same driver, DOPE!
This presentation will detail the process of addiction, including the role that dopamine and other neurotransmitters play in the development of addictive disorders. It will also explain the compulsions, cravings and consequences associated with addiction and the best practice treatment approaches designed to help pave the way on the road to recovery.
