Description

Falls are a significant concern for older adults as they are a cause of injury and mortality. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and exercise physiology play a key role in prevention and intervention for falls and fall-related injuries. This in-person course will provide recommendations to assist in the identification and management of fall risk for older adults.

Objectives

  • Summarize the components involved in maintaining balance and risk factors for falls
  • Describe psychometric properties of screening and assessment tools to identify fall risk and enhance the development of patient specific interventions
  • Synthesize knowledge to develop a comprehensive fall risk assessment strategy and identify older adults at increased risk for falling
  • Describe how to develop a comprehensive assessment and interventions to address fall risk, balance dysfunction, and gait dysfunction
  • Plan and develop a comprehensive discharge plan, including addressing the continuum of care, home exercise programs, and progression to evidence based community exercise program for minimizing fall risk, and improving balance/gait dysfunction
