Criteria for RN Medication Aide Instructors:
1. Hold a current, active, unrestricted NC Nursing License or compact license
2. 2 years full-time experience with medication administration
Participants must meet the North Carolina Board of Nursing prerequisites of having a current, active, unrestricted NC Nursing License and 2 years full time clinical experience to include direct patient care and medication administration. Once participant successfully completes the course, the participant will be able to apply for certification as a Medication Aide Instructor with the NC BON.
The following materials are designed to prepare the medication aide students to assume the role of the Medication Aide and to provide information that he/she will need to perform the basic competencies required to administer oral, buccal, sublingual, otic, ophthalmic, nasal, topical, inhalant, vaginal, and rectal medications. They include the instructor’s manual, student manual, a video packaged as a DVD or VHS. Each educator will infuse the material with his/ her presentation style, but the content is not to be altered, skipped or deviated from throughout the course presentation.
Medication aides were approved to practice in skilled nursing facilities (SNF, also known as long term care) in Senate Bill 622 August of 2005. The law became effective July 1, 2006, and State Division of Facility Services (DFS) rules for SNF became effective October 1, 2006. For more information about the Medication Aide laws

CREDIT INFORMATION:
16.0 CNE Contact Hours will be awarded. Participant must attend 100% of the program, successfully teach return demonstrations, and complete a post-test at the 90% level to receive credit.
