Legal Aspects of Nursing Documentation: How Well Would Your Documentation Hold up in Court?

Target Audience

RNs, LPNs, and any healthcare professional who performs patient documentation

Description

This program will acquaint the learner with legal issues related to documentation in the practice of nursing. An overview of nursing law regarding practice and legal requirements of nursing documentation methods will be comprehensively addressed. Case studies of actual litigation containing examples of legally defensible documentation and legally indefensible documentation will be carefully examined.

This program is jointly provided with South Piedmont AHEC and Southern Regional AHEC.

Learning Outcome
Participants will self-report of knowledge and confidence gained on proper nursing documentation.

About the Speaker
Pam Collins, RN, MSN, CMSRN, RN-MEDSURG BC, NPD-BC
Pam has 40 years of varied nursing experiences that include administration/management, education, and work as an education and legal consultant. While Pam currently works as an Independent Consultant, she maintains her skills by working for a healthcare system in Charlotte, NC. Pam is dually certified in medical-surgical nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses and is also certified in Nursing Professional Development. Pam has extensive experience with the legal aspects of nursing practice and has served as a consultant and expert witness for medical-surgical related cases involving nurses.
